What To Avoid Flushing Down The Toilet

Below are a list of items that should never be flushed down the toilet whether it clogs the sewers or contaminates our water.

Food

A piece of bread is okay, because it breaks down easily enough. An apple core or corn cob, however, do not break down so easily and can get stuck in the u-bend just under your toilet.

Food fat is liquid going down the drain, but once it hits the water system it congeals and forms what people in the business call “fatbergs”. Gross! Instead, keep jars underneath your sink and empty out all those fats, disposing the jar appropriately.

Toys

Anything that is “flushable” are items that break down when they hit the toilet water. Plastic toys are not one of them! If your children’s toys manage to get passed the u-bend (and not flood your bathroom), they are pretty much guaranteed to get jammed in the pipes in their journey. The once loved toy is now an arm, catching anything to try and get by it, and will cause a clog.

Tampons and Condoms

We have been misinformed when we were told tampons could be flushed. Although they are made of some natural material, which will break down eventually, tampons do not break down nearly fast enough, and build up in our sewers. Instead, throw them in a trash bin (lined with a plastic bag).

Condoms should be an obvious one. They are made of latex, or a latex-like material which take up to 100 years to break down. They belong in a trash bin.

Cat Litter and Feces

Cat little is meant to absorb water and clump! This is an easy way to clog the pipes. Furthermore, animal feces can contract parasites – not something we want in the water system. Throw cat litter in the trash bin.

Other materials such as hair, dental floss, bandaids, chewing gum, baby wipes, cotton balls/swabs, dryer sheets, feminine paper, paper towels and napkins are too thick or catch in the toilet and will clog it. Put what you can into a compost bin and the rest in a trash bin.

Finally, cigarette butts, cosmetics and prescription medicine are dangerous and possibly toxic materials which we do not want to find in our waterways.
